EMMANUEL – Age 29, church evangelist
“In 1994, I had almost finished primary but then the war came and I had to stop. My parents died and I wanted to help people stay faithful to God, so I became an evangelist. I wish I could go to seminary, but I don’t have good English or French skills.
“In our parish, maybe our biggest problem is that 70% of the people, both young and old, haven’t had enough school. We hope to start a kindergarten soon to help the next generation. We need adult education, too, to help people who had to quit school or who couldn’t afford to go. Some need help with basic reading and writing and others need more advanced skills.”

ESPERANCE – age 36, mother of three
“My kids now are 18, 16 and 13. We were in Tanzania but then we had to leave. My kids said, ‘Mama, you can’t go to school while we go to school!’ so I waited. But now I think it would be a good time for me to go back to school. I think now many people want to get more education.”
